Bryant Clenches his teeth as a bull and rider come bolting into the ring. The man on the back of the bull has a determined look on his face as he holds on tight.
One second... Five ... eight ... ("Yes, He's still on!" Bryant says.) twelve second... thirteen... Oh! The man is thrown violently to the ground and the Clowns kick into action and distract the bull. The man smiles, gets up, dusts himself off, and walks out of the ring.
The judges smile also and nod. Next round.
Nobody has ever seen the magnitude of sheer skill Bryant's childhood friend John Irwin possesses before. Most bulls he stays on somewhere between 10 and 20 seconds. he is to Bull riding like Nolan Ryan is to pitching, way in the lead. Actually, it was Bryant himself who suggested he take a career in Professional Bull Riding, and he did. That decision had payed off. Now John was the most successful Pro Bull Rider in the nation. Most of the money he made, though, he gave to charities like Right To Life, Food For The Hungry, and Rescue Missions. He only keeps enough to buy groceries and necessities for himself, pay the bills, pay tithe, and buy gifts for the neighborhood children at Christmas.
But today, as he approaches the next bull he is slated to ride, he hesitates. Could it be?... Bo's Excuse?... The toughest bull to ride the PGA has?...
He knows it is, but he has no choice. Sighing, He jumps on the back of the bull, the gates swing open, and he is taken on the most jolting ride of his life. All he can do is his best. Up, Down, Up, Down, synchronizing his body to the fast movement of the bull, he manages to stay on the hardest 9 seconds of his life. He prays as he lets go that he would land in a patch of daisies. But, Unfortunately, his body hits solid packed ground, accompanied by searing pain in his back and head, but he manages to stumble out of the ring. He later finds out he has 7 cracked Vertebrae and a mild concussion, but nothing serious enough to put him out of the sport.
Later, Bryant and John Get to talking.
"So, Bryant, where have you been lately? Haven't seen you around."
"I got a job as a All Around Jockey at Chestnut Hill."
"What horse?"
"Goldarado."
"Wowee. Triple Crown hopeful? That Goldarado?"
"Yep, but don't think I have better job than you do. You had guts to take on Bo's Excuse."
"I guess. Willowby wake up yet?"
"Nope. If she was awake, we'd be on our honeymoon."
A quick laugh, a congrats from Bryant, and two goodbyes later, Bryant is heading back to Chestnut Hill, and John to his next bullride arena.
