Val slowly walked up to the rusted iron gate and carefully unbolted it before lifting it upwards and heaving it open. The old paddock was dry and desolte except for a few empty buckets lying around and a small grey horse standing in the conrner. Val smiled and began to shuffle towards her. Mr Manders was right then, he did have a old horse down here and that meant, according to his words she was hers:"I had an old connemara once infact she's probably in one of the paddocks behind the barn, she's a smart one so she's probably done a runner. Hey, I'll start a bet, if she's still there you can keep her. If she's not I'll have you working here with my new yearlings for the next two months 4 times a week. Do we have a deal?" Valentia had happily agreed and now she had her own horse. After years of waiting she had a pony to call hers. Val cast a critcal eye over the little equine standing infront of her. She was pitifully skinny, with ribs poking out that gave her an ugly outline. Her mane was semi hogged and spiked out everywhere and she was covered in bites and gashes. But Val didn't care in the slightest, under all the flaws she saw a beautiful, gleaming, white horse standing proudly infront of her. "Yasmine" she said aloud to no-one. "Yasmine is your name" she repeated. Excitedly, she pulled an old rope halter onto her head a lightly sprung onto her narrow back. The mare seemed suprised and raised her head to look at the strange creature mounted upon her. Valentia asked her to go forwards and they slowly walked out of the field together.

Mr Manders had talked about a trail route that ran alongside the paddock and led down the valley to a small lake. Val searched the area around her but even from her vantage point no trail was to be seen. Despite the lack of guidance she began in a certain direction that lead towards an old forest of evergreen trees. It looked dark and cool inside there, just what they needed on a hot day like this. Perhaps, if they were lucky there would be a cool river or stream to walk through and drink from.It was then that Val became aware of Yasmine's left eye looking rather misty and white. Suddenly she realised why a perfectly "healthy" horse was doing doing in a neglected paddock. She was blind. Val quickly slid of her back and walked towards Yasmine's beautiful face, stroking her hand along the mare's withers and neck so not to scare her. She began to move her hand towards the pony's eye, yet the horse didn't even blink. When the palm of her hand finally touched the soft grey skin around her eye, it was only then the horse lifted her head up in suprise. Val tried the same thing on the other eye but to her relief found she blinked when her hand came close. "Poor girl" Val muttered. What could she do with a part blind horse? All the ideas of rosettes, the gymkhanas she would win, the jumps she would soar over, the midnight gallops over the hills, evaporated into thin air. But then Val realised that Yasmine needed her. She couldn't just abondon her like Mr Manders had done. She couldn't just leave her to gradually wither away and die without ever having being loved or cared for. "I'm not leaving you". Val said out loud. "Never." And thye walked into the deep forest, together.
